Frontend Developer Mock Interview: 40 Questions to Practice

Frontend Developer Mock Interview: 40 Questions to Practice

Frontend interviews can range from browser fundamentals to framework architecture. A strong preparation plan should cover both. JavaScript and browser fundamentals

  1. Explain the JavaScript event loop.
  2. What is a closure?
  3. What is the difference between promises and callbacks?
  4. How does asynchronous JavaScript work?
  5. What causes unnecessary re-renders?
  6. How does the browser render a page?
  7. What causes layout shift?
  8. How do you optimize page loading?
  9. React and frontend frameworks

    9. How does component state work?

    10. When should state be local vs shared?

    11. What causes a React component to re-render?

    12. How do you optimize expensive rendering?

    13. How do you structure a large frontend application?

    14. How do you manage server state?

    15. How do you handle errors in frontend applications?

    16. How do you test components?

    Performance

    17. How would you investigate a slow page?

    18. What causes a large JavaScript bundle?

    19. How would you reduce initial load time?

    20. What is lazy loading?

    21. When should you use code splitting?

    22. How would you investigate memory problems?

    Accessibility

    23. What makes a web application accessible?

    24. How do semantic HTML elements help?

    25. How would you test keyboard navigation?

    26. How do you think about screen readers?

    Architecture

    27. How would you structure a large frontend application?

    28. How would you design component boundaries?

    29. How would you manage frontend configuration?

    30. How would you handle authentication?

    31. How would you manage API failures?

    32. How would you prevent duplicated client state?

    Behavioral

    1. Tell me about a difficult frontend bug.
    2. Tell me about a performance improvement.
    3. Tell me about a disagreement over UI architecture.
    4. Tell me about a time you had to work with a designer who disagreed with you.
    5. Tell me about a frontend project that failed.
    6. Tell me about a technical decision you would change.
    7. How do you balance speed and code quality?
    8. What frontend skill are you currently improving?
    9. Don't practice only framework trivia Frontend candidates sometimes spend too much time memorizing framework-specific interview questions. Framework knowledge matters.

But deeper questions often matter more

Can you reason about performance? Can you debug? Can you make good architecture decisions? Can you explain tradeoffs? Can you build accessible interfaces? Practice explaining technical concepts simply

      Take

      “What causes unnecessary re-renders?”

      Explain it to

A recruiter A junior developer A senior frontend engineer This helps you develop communication depth rather than memorization. A useful frontend practice scenario

      Imagine

“Our application feels slow on mobile. How would you investigate?” Don't immediately list optimization techniques.

      Start with

      What does “slow” mean?

      Then determine

      • initial load
      • interaction latency
      • rendering
      • network
      • JavaScript execution
      • image assets
      • API response time

      Then decide what to investigate.

That is stronger than simply reciting

lazy loading, caching, memoization. [Practice a Frontend Developer mock interview with Mockly] DAYS 34–37 Mockly Days 34–37: Data, ML and Infrastructure Interview Guides
